You probably don’t get along with everybody, which means you may not get along with your roommate. But what are some reasons you’ll hate your roommate? I could give you a plethora of reasons, but I’m going to give you the top 5. But hopefully (very hopefully) these reasons, or any reason, will not apply to you and your roommate!
1) They don’t shower and stink up the whole room
You will have one stinky roommate and room if you or your roommate don’t shower on a regular basis. And no one is going to want to be near you, or your room, if that is the case. So keep up your own personal hygiene at least.
2) They eat all your food that you paid for! It’s like eating your money, if you explicitly said that you didn’t want them to eat it – then that is really rude! If you said you’d share, then just ask them if they finish the said food item that you’d like them to replenish it, easy enough – right?
3) They aren’t courteous of your sleeping (or studying)
If they barge in and are extremely noisy when you’re sleeping, well that’s a rude awakening. What’s worse is if they turn on lights while you’re sleeping. Solve this problem with a flashlight by the door so they can see where their things are.
4) They don’t pick up after themselves
Sadly you aren’t at home where you can leave everything on the floor and pick it up later. You have a roommate, and it’s their living space as much as it is yours. So don’t leave your clothes scattered all over the place, and hopefully they won’t do the same.
5) “Personal space” doesn’t exist in their vocabulary If they are always over your shoulder asking you what you’re doing, that can get really annoying, and fast. Try and create small-talk with them – enough information to satisfy their curiosity, but not the in-depth analysis of everything you’re thinking and feeling.
To (hopefully) stop any of this from happening: “treat others how you want to be treated” is the best rule-of-thumb in this situation.
