So you picked the perfect dorm. It’s your first place. But now that you’re living in it your realizing that it kind of has a prison feel to it. Everything is old and uniform. Ideally you would decorate but as it is you only have enough in your budget to eat ramen noodles all month. But you might be surprised how many ways you can decorate your dorm room for almost nothing.
1. Once you look you will notice that most places you go in college give you some form of paper handout. Be it a program at a play or a business card at an info. meeting. Just start tacking them to your wall. It might sound stupid but it becomes like a collage of what you, your roommates, and your friends have done all semester.

2. Along the same lines don’t forget to put class handouts like the syllabus and class calendar on your wall. It will keep you motivated and remembering due dates, even toward the end of the semester.

3. If you have little extra cash and you want to actually decorate go to the second hand shop. Most college students dump their stuff there after graduating just because they don’t want to move it. Chances are you will find some pretty good deals.

4. If nothing else a white board is essential. But don’t just use it for self-reminder notes. Keep score. Who is champion wasp killer in the dorm? Who owes you money? Who borrowed your DVD? It is just fun, and it’s an important tool.
In the end your dorm will always be a little gross looking. But that doesn’t mean you and your roommates can’t have fun making it your gross dorm. The more personal it is the more you won’t feel like you’ve been arrested.
